About the procedure

Chin plastic surgery focuses on a disproportionate solution to asymmetry and imbalance in this area. These are deviations that look inappropriate and disproportionate when looking at the face, and this adjustment makes it possible to achieve a harmonic shape.

It’s considered normal, when the root of the nose, the upper lip and the chin form an imaginary joint line. However, the shape and size of the chin is formed both by the lower jaw with the jawbone and by soft tissues, which require quality assessment, as they may lose elasticity over time.

Chin plastic surgery effectively reduces, enlarges and moves the jaw without or with the help of an implant, so that the proportions to the other parts of the face are kept in the best possible ratio.

For whom implants are suitable

Chin plastic surgery is suitable for people with completed growth, for those who aren’t satisfied with their appearance. Abnormalities suitable for the surgery include receding chin, buck teeth with the characteristic upper jaw enlargement, a bent bite with an oversized lower jaw, a large gap between the upper and lower teeth (it‘s preferable to adjust the bite first, and only then surgically adjust the chin). Often, chin plastic surgery is also used for psychological reasons to increase self-confidence.

Benefits of the procedure

  • checkImproving aesthetic appearance, increasing self-confidence
  • checkLong-lasting effect
  • checkAdjusting contours and shapes, illustrating facial characteristics
  • checkPossible combination with other procedures, such as nose surgery, facial surgeries
  • checkStitches aren’t visible

The course of treatment

Chin plastic surgery takes place in general anaesthesia and requires post-surgery hospitalisation for about 2 days. Plastic surgery to reduce the size of the chin is performed by making a cut on the lower lip from the inner part. By removing the soft tissues, the chin protrusion is exposed, the excess part of which is removed by a bone milling cutter, and the chin is then remodelled. The wound is stitched with absorbable stitches. If the surgery concerns an asymmetric chin, the course is the same, only the chin protrusion is milled to the desired symmetrical shape and the cut is stitched. If the asymmetry is large, a part of the chin must be removed, and the loose bone is moved and shaped by the bone milling cutter. The wound is stitched and fixed with a compression patch for about 5 days.

Chin plastic surgery, where enlargement is required, is performed with the help of an implant or by shifting the bone itself. The cut is done under the inner part of the lip, where a suitable implant (we use the Medpor brand, which has invaluable properties – as it spreads to the surrounding bone and gradually supplements the bone tissue) is attached to the bone with titanium screws to avoid shifting, the wound is stitched with absorbable stitches. The advantage is that the implant can be shaped as needed.

When shifting the bone itself, the cut is made on the bottom mucous membrane in the mouth, the soft tissues are lifted and the lower jaw is exposed, in order to cut off the lower part of the chin, the loosened part is moved to the pre-required shape, fastened with a small titanium splint and screws and fixed with a compression patch.

Before the procedure

Chin plastic surgery is an invasive aesthetic surgery, which is only suitable for healthy patients. Before the surgery, it‘s necessary to discontinue blood thinners and bleeding medication for approximately 14 days. It‘s also necessary that the patient isn’t burdened with a viral or inflammatory disease. Chin plastic surgery isn’t appropriate during pregnancy.

After the procedure

After chin plastic surgery, the treated areas can be more painful or swollen, which can be alleviated by classic painkillers and cold compressions. The swelling will usually disappear in about 14 days, but it may last longer if the jawbone was moved or the angle of the lower jaw was changed. Chin plastic surgery requires approximately 1-3 days of hospitalisation, followed by post-surgery home care consisting of a resting mode and mash diet for about a week before the wounds are healed. It’s also advisable to increase oral hygiene, to rinse the mouth with sage, mint or chamomile. When adjusting the asymmetry of the chin, it’s necessary to fix the chin with patches for approximately 7 days; if stitches are not from absorbable material, they will be removed after approximately 10 days.

Chin plastic surgery requires reduced physical activity for 2-4 weeks, after which patients return to their normal working and personal lifestyle. After the surgery, it’s important to avoid any impact on the lower jaw.
