About the procedure

Thanks to modern vascular surgery, it is possible to offer patients comprehensive care for venous system diseases – varicose veins surgery. We use mini-invasive methods and treatment is performed on an outpatient basis, without the need for anesthesia. We utilize the most modern and highly innovative minimally-invasive methods (thermal – laser/radiofrequency ablation, non-thermal – venous glue, mechano-chemical ablation).

We base our philosophy on continuous education of our specialists, all our procedures thus correspond to current recommendations of international professional societies. The goal is not only therapeutic effect, but also aesthetic result of the procedure.

Varicose veins surgery - when to undergo?

Varicose veins (varices) are one of the manifestations of chronic venous insufficiency (CHVI), namely the second stage of this disease. The most common manifestations of chronic venous insufficiency include pain, swelling and visible varicose veins (varices), which in the initial phase may not limit the patient in any way, but as the disease progresses, chronic venous insufficiency can manifest itself, for example, in the formation of inflammation or leg ulcers. In exceptional cases, the disease can even result in pulmonary embolism.

We indicate treatment primarily in symptomatic patients who suffer from swelling, cramps, pain and feeling of heavy legs. With targeted treatment, we eliminate symptoms and prevent disease progression to a more serious stage. We also offer treatment to patients for whom visible varices represent an aesthetic problem and who do not show signs of CHVI at the same time.

Types of procedures we perform:

Venous surgery includes all minimally-invasive methods of varicose veins surgery.

Mini-invasive treatment methods

  • the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis and does not last longer than 30-45 minutes
  • no preoperative examinations, only partial anesthesia, without the need for hospitalization
  • during the procedure, the affected vein is closed thermally or chemically, the procedure is completely safe thanks to ultrasound control from several skin punctures, skin incision is not necessary
  • removal of the affected vein does not occur in the same way as with classic invasive method, the procedure causes closure of the treated vein, which subsequently changes into a scar and is gradually absorbed
  • compared to classic invasive treatment, the main advantage of minimally invasive methods is low postoperative pain, moreover the patient can immediately return to their daily activities including work

According to the closure mechanism, we divide mini-invasive methods as follows:

Thermal mini-invasive methods (vein destruction by heat action) – the procedure is performed under local, so-called tumescent anesthesia – the treated vein is wrapped with anesthetic solution, the goal is to prevent damage to surrounding tissues due to heat.

  1. Laser ablation (EVLT – endovenous laser treatment) – a laser fiber is inserted into the affected vein, which destroys the inner wall of the vein due to thermal energy, resulting in its closure

Non-thermal mini-invasive methods (vein destruction without heat action), without the need for anesthesia

  1. Venous glue – venous glue (cyano-acrylate) is applied into the affected vein.

If lateral varicose veins are of larger extent, it is possible to supplement all minimally-invasive methods with so-called phlebectomy/sclerotherapy; sclerotherapy can be performed during the procedure or with a 6-month interval.

At the patient’s request, we can supplement the procedure with analgosedation. This is controlled pain and anxiety suppression in the presence of an anesthesiologist, but it is not general anesthesia.

Sclerotherapy (foam sclerotherapy)

This is a method where a special foamed drug (foam sclerotherapy) is applied by injection into smaller varicose veins that are not suitable for surgical treatment. The action of this substance causes non-infectious chemical inflammation in the vein wall. The affected vein subsequently closes and the venous pattern disappears from the skin. This method is subject to strict indication. First, it is necessary to solve the main cause of the disease: most often it is so-called reflux into the main trunk vein. Sclerotherapy is usually performed as adjunctive treatment after solving the cause of varix formation. As independent treatment, it is performed only when the basic cause of the disease has already been eliminated.

Conventional surgical treatment

  • need for general anesthesia and hospitalization, operation is performed on the day of admission, the following day the patient is discharged
  • complete preoperative examination
  • the principle of the procedure is “pulling out” (stripping) the affected vein from several skin incisions
  • the procedure is usually supplemented with so-called phlebectomy – larger varicose veins are removed from several smaller incisions
  • the main disadvantage of traditional surgical treatment of varices is postoperative pain, long convalescence (4-6 weeks) and risk of postoperative wound complications, which we do not have to fear with mini-invasive methods
